SLIM chances of Warrington Campus men’s football third team gaining promotion ended with a 3-1 home defeat to Keele University in their final game of the season.

Tom Haines headed the visitors in front two minutes before the break after Jake Green and captain Faheem Hasan both missed chances to give the hosts the lead.

Goals from Alex Boham and Murshad Rob sealed the win for the Staffordshire side before substitute Suki Osemi grabbed a consolation goal deep into injury time.

The result sees Warrington leapfrogged by their opponents in the league table, leaving them with a sixth-placed finish.

After a nervy opening, Keele right back Joe Franklin found himself in an advanced position only to send his shot wide of Kristn Higson’s right post.

Green had his point-blank effort kept out superbly by visiting stopper James Johnson before Hasan volleyed off target from an equally threatening position.

Warrington were then awarded an indirect free kick just yards from goal following a mix up in the Keele defence, but Ryan Hanlan’s effort was charged down well.

The breakthrough came against the run of play, Haines beating his man at the front post to glance home a header from a well-delivered corner with just two minutes left in the half.

After a dull opening to the second period, Keele doubled the lead, Boham on hand to slide home the loose ball after Higson was only able to parry a stinging drive from distance.

As the home side pushed for a way back into the game, they were hit with a sucker-punch third after a lovely counter attack was finished impressively by Rob.

Osemi came off the bench to grab a consolation goal for the hosts after an impressive run by Hanlan, but it was too little too late for the Padgate side whose wait for glory is extended another year.
