Parents set up Facebook page to gather evidence against drivers
CAMPAIGNERS are calling for Sycamore Lane, Great Sankey, to be made safer after reports of a number of near misses at a crossing.
Parents have set up a group on social networking site Facebook to tackle the problem after claims of cars failing to stop at the top of the road as youngsters head to school in Chapelford.
The new Chapelford Village Primary School opened earlier this year replacing Sycamore Lane Primary meaning many parents make the journey regularly.
Organisers behind the Safer Routes Facebook page have said the group has the full support of the school’s board of governors but now needs evidence.
They are calling for witnesses to record any incidents including the vehicle registration and dates and times.
A council spokesman said: “The safety audit team independently checked the safety of this crossing and it was identified that the visibility on both approaches was within the guidance and that the final infrastructure itself assists all pedestrians, cyclists, visually impaired, prams and wheelchairs.
“It is understood from individuals using the crossing that some drivers are failing to adhere to the highway code by not stopping when pedestrians are using this facility.
“With the assistance of those concerned, the council is looking into the matter to see if there are any additional measures that could be introduced to manage these few individuals.
“This may require a partnership approach with Cheshire Police.”
