FEARS that Westbrook Library could be closed have been dismissed by bosses at LiveWire after it was revealed that its lease was coming to an end.

A spokesman said: “Westbrook library is managed by LiveWire and we have no plans to close at present.

"We are working with the council, and other partners to review our future investment in neighbourhood facilities across the borough and will aim to ensure we deliver the value offered by our facilities in different ways to meet the needs and expectations of our users and as much as possible the future needs of our residents.”

But Callands parish councillor Michelle Harrison has urged the community to rally together to make sure the facility remains open as she is concerned that the limited services in the area could still be moved.

Cllr Harrison believes there is a real possibility that a library will be created within a new hub that is to be located on the site of Sankey Forum.

She said: "Reference has been made to these big plans but nobody can be specific.

"However we do know that a period of consultation is going to start in the New Year. The cynic within me feels that it may well be a short period of consultation. So we need to act now."

She added: "People of the Cromwell Corridor please let your friends and neighbours know about the changes that are coming. If you have misgivings get in touch with your borough councillors and write to your MP."

If the library remains open Cllr Harrison would like to see the library developed as a place for community-based groups to meet.
