Youngsters go active during sports day

HUNDREDS of children showcased their finest sports skills during Asda's second active event in the town.

Around 250 youngsters took part in the sports day at Winwick Primary School on Myddleton Lane.

Asda community life champions supported the events by providing healthy refreshments, as well as giving educational talks on nutrition and hydration.

The aim of the event was to introduce young people to the benefits of leading healthy lifestyles through greater physical activity and better food choices.

Art project to spark health kick

BUDDING artists from schools in the town unleashed their creative sides as part of an art project with the Ikea store in Westbrook.

Warrington Borough Council invited the pupils to create pieces of art to celebrate Walk to School Week and World Environment Day.

Great Sankey Primary, Winwick Primary, St Vincent's Primary and St Philip's Primary took part in the project with their work displayed at the store on the Europa Boulevard.

Each school received a scooter stand and a £100 Ikea voucher.

Cllr Hans Mundry, executive member for highways, transport and public realm, said: “It is great to see young people get involved in creating art to express their thoughts about walking to school and the benefits it can bring to the environment.

“It is important to get children off to a healthy start, so everyday activities like walking to school can help create healthy lifestyles that can last a lifetime.

“The artwork is very creative, I hope it inspires others to walk to school and get involved with local environmental projects.”
