AHEAD of the RAF Heritage Centre's Stars and Stripes weekend, its curator Roy Thorpe-Apps is confident that this year's celebrations will leave guests starry eyed.

This will be the fourth time the centre has hosted the event, which promises to be bigger and better by bringing a packed weekend of military nostalgia to the town.

From war re-enactment groups to classic and military vehicles on display, it is hoped this weekend-long festivities will be the best yet.

Roy, who is also the UK President of the Burtonwood Association, said: "There is plenty to do and to keep everyone entertained. We organised the first stars and stripes weekend to raise funds to make sure we can keep the base open and help pay for future projects."

Burtonwood Heritage Centre, which is located at Gulliver's Theme Park, was opened to preserve the memories of the men women who were stationed at air base from 1940 to 1993.

The centre was built on the site of RAF Burtonwood, formerly the largest airfield in Europe and was used by the USA during the Second World War and the Cold War.

Since it first opened its doors, the centre allows visitors to commemorate the hundreds of people who served their while discovering more about the air base's past.

The centre is always looking for ways to grow and Roy is hoping that a replica chapel will be opened in the centre next year.

He said: "There were 7,500 weddings held at the air base so this will trigger memories for a lot of returning men and women."

The stars and stripes event will take place this weekend with an evening of dancing to take place on the Saturday.

Tickets for the weekend can be purchased on the day but entry to the dance must be organised in advance.
