With its rugged looks, the new Subaru Forester isn’t conventionally good-looking but it’s big, dominant and it definitely means business.

It is slightly taller, wider and longer than its predecessor, and the high driving position gives you plenty of confidence on the roads, whatever the conditions.

There are three 2.0-litre engines to choose from – a 150PS naturally-aspirated petrol engine and a 147PS turbocharged diesel unit, as well as a new FA20 DIT direct injection turbocharged petrol unit, which produces 240PS.

I drove the 2.0-litre Boxer Diesel engine, which is expected to account for 50 per cent of Forester sales in the UK. It was smooth and refined, and although there was a bit of road noise it wasn’t too intrusive.

The engine is the same as that in the outgoing Forester and the Legacy and XV, and is mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

Inside – though slightly uninspiring – is spacious and very comfortable for everyone, even taller passengers. Boot space has now increased from 450 to 505 litres.

This is a hugely practical car, but also one that is fun and engaging to drive. All versions have permanent four-wheel drive, and its off-road capability is where the Forester’s real strength lies – so it’s the perfect choice if you enjoy the great outdoors.

The six trim levels come with a generous level of standard equipment, including 17-inch alloy wheels, self-levelling rear suspension, roof rails, heated front seats, hill-start and Bluetooth, while XC models add in a sunroof, electric driver’s seat, useful reversing camera and wiper heaters.

I found the Forester’s sound system pretty dated and rather clumsy. I don’t suppose you’d buy a car based on this alone, but more and more people are starting to expect DAB radio. I’m sure it won’t bother die-hard Subaru fans though.

The Forester has been awarded the full five-star Euro NCAP crash safety rating.

Subaru’s Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) electronic stability control system has been upgraded for superior stability, while a new Trailer Stability Control also improves safety during towing.

Greater use of ultra-high tensile steel reinforces the vehicle, making it exceptionally strong yet light.

All safety equipment is fitted as standard to every model in the range, including twin front, side, curtain and knee airbags.

It has a five-year, 100,000-mile warranty plus a 12-year anti-corrosion guarantee.
