LAWRENCE Bellamy, from the University of Chester's Padgate campus, talks World Cup economics in his latest column.

High profile events such as the World Cup are huge cash generators for economies.

This doesn’t mean that they make money for the organisers however. Sales of large televisions, replica tops and flags for cars are probably more certain!

The Rugby League World Cup is something of a distant memory now, but for a while it did put Warrington at a higher level of recognition in certain areas of the globe such as Samoa and generated a little extra local revenue too.

So if Warrington could hold its own World Cup where would it be able to pick potential winners from? In terms of industry there are some front runners, including logistics, manufacturing and nuclear sectors.

For logistics top teams include Eddie Stobarts and Hermes. For manufacturing there are global players including Flextronics (the force behind many global brands) and off-shoots of companies such as the massive Hewlett-Packard, though suffering locally.

However if you want to see the really ‘big hitters’ then take a look at nuclear in Warrington with; Sellafield, Amec, Nuvia, Nuclear Technologies, DBD and others in the vicinity.

The strength of this cluster really helps to put Warrington on the map and makes Warrington the Nuclear World Champion.
