ROB Green has been jailed in connection with his campaign to name and shame officials he claimed were guilty of abusing a disabled girl.

The 65-year-old was sentenced at Stonehaven Sheriff Court in Aberdeen on Friday after being found guilty at trial for breach of the peace and breaking bail conditions.

Mr Green received a total prison term of 12 months. It is believed he is planning to appeal.

Following the case, a Crown Office spokesman said: “This was a serious matter involving the publication of offensive and alarming allegations which had a significant impact on the people who were the subject of the material George Robert Green published.

“Following a trial on summary complaint, Green was convicted of breach of the peace and breaches of bail. Sentencing is a matter for the court.

“As with any case, the decision to prosecute was taken after full and careful consideration of the facts and circumstances.”

The conviction relates to the Appleton resident’s campaign on behalf of a Down’s syndrome girl who says she was abused by people in positions of authority in Scotland for 14 years.

Mr Green, of Birchdale Road, was originally arrested in February 2010 after handing out leaflets naming those allegedly involved as paedophiles.

At his trial two years later the former owner of Mossley Travel Agents in Lymm said he was denied key witnesses. A formal complaint was made to the court.

But following the sentencing last week, he has been sent to HMP Aberdeen. Supporters have since set up a website called freerobertgreen.co.uk.

Warrington South MP David Mowat had spoken to Mr Green during his high risk campaign and saw him present the case at the House of Commons.

He said: “I’ve met Rob several times and he has always struck me as courageous and believes in what he does.

“I wasn’t in court and I didn’t see the evidence but the sentence seems very high for somebody with no criminal record.

“My understanding is he is going to appeal both conviction and sentence.”
