BUDDING actors, scriptwriters, directors and even lighting arrangers can learn the tips of the theatre trade in a new course.

Kathryn Cooke, aged 21, was so disappointed to hear the youth theatre group at the Pyramid was no longer running, that she decided to open a new one herself.

Unable to find a job since graduating in theatre and media in June, the former Bridgewater High School pupil has set up Express Youth Theatre with friend Matthew Thomas.

“A lot of youth groups these days almost teach people to be famous.

“We want to teach everything that surrounds the theatre. So the classes will include scriptwriting, acting, directing and more.

“We will also be teaching how to work together and everything people may not see at the theatre that goes on behind the scenes,” she said.

Kathryn, from Stockton Heath, attended the previous youth theatre group which closed five years ago.

She and Matthew, aged 22, a graphic designer, will help the youngsters who sign up, aged between 12 and 16, to put on a showcase at the end of the three month long course.

She added: “There will be a little bit of everything. There will be pieces from plays but also bits that perhaps have been written in our scriptwriting sessions.”

The course runs every Wednesday between 6.15pm and 8.45pm at the Pyramid.
