A PERMANENT memorial could be erected in Lymm to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Members of Lymm Parish Council are considering a range of options to mark June’s event.

And one could be a fountain in the lower dam in the centre of the village, which would cost around £2,000.

Parish councillors are also looking at the possibility of planting trees and say they will be looking at having a street party to coincide with the May Queen Festival in early June.

Geoff Hawley, deputy Lord Lieutenant, spoke at last month’s meeting as representative of Cheshire’s Lord Lieutenant David Briggs.

He said the only other previous diamond jubilee in history was in 1897 when there was a substantial restoration of Lymm Cross.

He said: “It is possible to install a really attractive floating fountain with lights and a choice of fountain heads in the Lower Dam for less than £2,000.

“It would be easily maintained and such a fountain would have no adverse environmental impact on the ecology.

“It could be moved out of the way, if necessary, for such events as the duck race, or for the maintenance of the dam itself.”

The parish council supports the idea and will now set up a committee to discuss the idea in more detail.
