A GROUNDBREAKING new prototype created at Daresbury Laboratory could revolutionise cancer treatment.

The Electron Model for Many Applications accelerator has been designed by an international consortium of scientists as part of the Conform project, which includes the Universities of Manchester, Oxford, Surrey, Imperial, Brunel, Liverpool and Huddersfield.

The existing accelerators have already had a beneficial impact on society with their wide range of uses in industry, medicine and basic science – including development of the MRI and X-rays.

But they operate on principles developed more than 50 years ago and their potential is limited by their sheer size, complexity and cost.
