A YOUTH club could reopen at Fearnhead Cross Community Centre this month after it closed in June.

Poulton with Fearnhead Parish Council has been negotiating with Warrington Youth Support Service for the club to resume following its closure seven months ago.

Chairman Clr Dougie Ashbrook says he has been told it will happen in the next few weeks, although provision of a youth club is likely to be alternated with outreach work.

He said: “We had a meeting and they were trying to follow the idea of having workers on the streets, but we want the kids off the streets.

“What we need is consistency of what we provide.

“We don’t want teenagers turning up and us having to say the club is not on.

“We want the club to be open for them, and our time to be spent getting them off the park and off the streets.

“Will they come back straight away? I do not know.

“They will want to see that it is on each week. Everyone seems to forget these are good kids who do not want to be on the streets.”

The club stopped in June after a support worker left the youth service.

Their replacement was due in September but Warrington Borough Council then backtracked on plans to re-open the club.

Following the conclusion of a survey by youth services, it is likely to open once a week on a Thursday evening.

Tracy Ryan, service manager, said: “Warrington Youth Support Service aims to provide the best possible service given our allocated resources in Fearnhead.

“Recent performance data indicates this may be through a mixture of detached outreach and youth club provision through a structured programme over a number of weeks.”

And Mrs Ryan added that youngsters in the area will be kept informed about what services are available.

“We will ensure all provision is suitably promoted and performance managed so that we can demonstrate attendance and take up figures for all activities,” she added.
