A DOUBLE decker bus has hit a bridge in Grappenhall - ripping the roof off.

Police initially said nobody was injured.

It has now emerged that three school children have been taken to hospital.

A spokesman for Warrington Hospital said that two children have been released after treatment for facial cuts and bruises, while one girl is still being treated.

It is believed she needs to go to a hospital in Liverpool for surgery on her ear after a piece of metal went through it.

The driver is still at Warrington Hospital being treated for shock.

A spokesman for the North West Ambulance Service said no children were picked up from the scene.

Eleven pupils, from Lymm High School, were on board at the time.

The bus hit the low bridge near to the junction of Cliff Lane and Weaste Lane at around 8.10am.

It is understood the bus took a wrong turn.

The road has been closed by council bosses while further investigations take place.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said the bus has now been removed and that an engineer has attended the scene to inspect the bridge.

A spokesman for Warrington Borough Council said: "Our immediate priority is to support the school children and families involved in this incident in any way we can and offer any help and advice that they need.

“We are carrying out a full investigation and our highways officers have already been on the scene to make sure that the highway is safe.”
