THE cousin of a teenager who died from adult cot death beat thousands in a fun run and raised £700 for charity in the process.

Matthew Haydock, aged 24, from St Helens, won the 5km Big Fun Run, at Sefton Park, in Liverpool, in memory of Colin Hankin, from Woolston, who died two days after his 18th birthday in 2000 from rare condition SADS.

SADS, Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome, strikes when the heart beats too quickly, slowly or irregularly.

Colin’s mum Angela Morris, who has been north west co-ordinator for research charity SADS UK for the past eight years, said: “We’re all so proud of Matthew as he won the race at a time of 18 minutes. He put his heart and soul into it and did it for Colin.

“Colin was like a brother to Matthew and he wanted so much to do something for Colin.”

Angela, aged 50, of Long Barn Lane, Fearnhead, also took part in the run along with daughter Gemma who is six months pregnant.

She added: “Gemma is expecting a boy and it’s a happy time for us but so sad that he won’t know his uncle.”

Angela holds a bereavement support group in Sandbach once a month and all are welcome to attend.
