WOLVES centre Matt King has lost his lucky locks, all in the name of charity.

The Australian, almost as famous for his head of hair as he is for his rugby skills, joined forces with children’s charity Families United, agreeing to let one lucky fan cut off his mane.

The winning ‘raise and shave’ ticket belonged to Anita Williams, aged 51 of Elaine Street, Padgate, and she was feeling a bit apprehensive about the task that lay ahead.

The 51-year-old said: “I’m very excited, and very, very nervous. I just hope I do a good job.

“If he loses his strength like Samson and Delilah I think the whole of Warrington will be after me.”

While the 29-year-old rugby star seemed relaxed about his impending chop, he admitted to feeling a tangle of emotions.

He said: “I’ve got mixed feelings about it really, part relief at having it gone, but it’s also a bit like losing a best mate.

“But it’s all for a great cause so I’m happy to get behind Families United.”

The event, at Johnson’s Hairdressing on Sankey Street, managed to raise £1,245 for the charity, supporting disabled children, their families and carers.

He added: “Everyone at the charity is doing a great job and I think raising more than £1,000 just by getting my hair cut.

“It would be selfish if I didn’t do something like this.”

It seems that the rugby star’s confidence in his playing won’t be lost with his hair, as he has no worries about the cut affecting his game.

He said: “It’s just a haircut, but I suppose I’ll get the blame if things go pear-shaped. I’m pretty confident things will be ok.”
