COUNCILLORS are set to meet tommorrow, Thursday, to discuss proposals to improve community safety in Winsford.

A number of measures are already in place to deal with resident's safety in the town including a drug action team, a crime prevention panel and a "kidsafe" project.

The new steps are intended to develop more effective ways to fight crime.

In a report, Bob Floyd, director of Environmental and Housing Services, said: "The scale of the involvement will have to match the resources available.

"We may be seeking to involve the borough council in the active promotion of Home Watch Schemes.

"This will be the first of a number of community safety issues and will be in consultation with the police and the crime prevention panel.

"As a council we already know from a number of recent local studies that community safety is one of the major concerns felt by Vale Royal residents.

"The proposals would place a responsibility on each local authority to promote and co-ordinate community safety in their areas.

"Cheshire chief executives believe that more could be done to work collectively and at the very least improve the exchange of ideas.

"There are a range of initiatives that are currently being developed in liaison with existing and new partners within the borough.

"The Cheshire Rural Parish Challenge was recently launched by the Cheshire Partnership for Safer Communities and aims to develop schemes with town and parish councils to improve community safety."
