I WOULD like to respond to the letter published in the Guardian of March 21.

In it, the writers made the valid point that the recently published school league tables do not tell the whole story about the performance of any school. We would agree with that.

Those concerned with the life and work of St. Peter's Primary School, Newton, are well aware of the dedication and hard work of all schools within the Borough of St. Helens and have the greatest respect for their achievements.

However, as in all schools, the results which were achieved at St. Peter's reflect the hard work and consistently dedicated efforts of the staff and children at the school and are a measure of the support which parents willingly give to their children's education.

We do not claim to be beyond criticism but we would refer the writers to the recent Ofsted inspection which was complimentary about most areas of school work.

We are always striving to improve the standard of education which we deliver to the children in our care. If parents do feel we have not done the best we can for their children, they would be wise to bring the matter to the attention of the head teacher.

Standards in education are best served nowadays by a partnership between teachers, children, governors - and parents.
