GENEROUS pupils at Burtonwood Primary School are helping children on the other side of the world.

They are appealing for help to send books, pencil cases and sports equipment to Banjulnding Primary School in the Gambia.

A teacher from the African school visited Burtonwood to talk to the children about life in the Gambia and the two schools have written to each other ever since.

Barbara Smith, a teacher at the Warrington school, said: "Conditions in Africa are very hard for the children. The facilities in the school are very poor and our pupils decided they wanted to help. Transporting the equipment out of the country is a big problem, posting it in the usual way is too expensive. We can arrange for it to be picked up in Africa but we need ideas on how to get it there."

The school is also arranging sponsorship of the Gambian children for £10 per year. This money will pay for their books, uniforms and school dinners.

Anyone who can help the school with sponsorship, transport or donations of money and equipment should ring Burtonwood Primary school on 224072.
