KINDHEARTED helpers are desperately hunting for more people to help them ferry Lymm's elderly around the village.

Every Wednesday afternoon about 30 housebound pensioners are collected from their homes and taken for afternoon tea before being driven home again.

Under the scheme, run by Lymm churches, 22 regular drivers take the old people to the United Reformed Church Hall, on Brookfield Road, for the afternoon.

But now numbers of drivers are dwindling and the club's organisers are trying to recruit new volunteers.

Ralph McCulloch, the club's transport manager, said: "We want to find people who are willing to help so we can then take on more members.

"Fortunately we have reserve drivers who are willing to fill in on an occasional basis but replacements who can drive regularly are urgently needed.

"More drivers will be required as the demand for our services continues to grow."

Drivers operate on a fortnightly basis and ferry the elderly to the hall between 1.30pm and 2pm and home again between 4.30pm and 5pm.

Regular drivers receive a quarterly rota so they know when they are on duty.
