DOGS and their owners were on their best behaviour when they were presented with an award from the prestigious Kennel Club.

The twosomes had graduated from the club's national good citizen course - a scheme which has just been launched by the Great Sankey puppy school, the Dog Squad.

The award is open to owners of all ages and dogs can be pedigree or mongrel.

The Dog Squad runs the programme of training sessions, which teach dogs to be sociable and owners to be responsible.

Dog Squad organiser Helen Sampson said: "It's about basic good manners. Dogs are taught to walk on a lead, not to jump up and to lie or sit down when their owners stop to chat in the street.

"Owners are also tested on things such as whether they carry poop scoops and clean up after their pets."

The first graduates of the scheme collected their certificates and rosettes from Warrington's head of environmental health, Andrew Gilbert.
