BIDDULPH Players make history next week when they stage a comedy by one of Britain's most popular playwrights.

John Godber, the founder of the Hull Truck Theatre Company, is best known for the hilarious Bouncers, which centres around a motley crew of nightclub doormen.

However Biddulph Players will be tackling probably the most topical theme of the 1990s, the lottery, when they stage his comedy Lucky Sods.

The play, written in 1995, is a first for the company, as it believed to be the first time it has been performed by an amateur drama group.

Players' secretary Dorothy Murdoch and Jonathan Hurst take the roles of lottery winners Morris and Jean, and the comedy takes a hilarious but sometimes poignant look at the consequences of their win.

"We staged Up and Under, another John Godber play, seven years ago, and thought Lucky Sods would be a good choice for our latest production,'' said Mrs Murdoch.

"They are all good parts to play, and it's funny, sad and very topical.''

Liz Howle from Biddulph plays Connie in her first part for Biddulph Players, and the comedy, the player's final production of the season, is being staged at Knypersley First School from April 9 to 12.
