FIRE FIGHTERS have given a Nantwich county councillor the axe - to thank him for 40 years service!

Veteran councillor Tom Holman received the coveted Silver Axe Award at last Thursday's passing out parade for Cheshire fire brigade cadets.

The axe is a highly prized reward for the best young cadet and Councillor Holman presented this year's top recruit, Simon Todd, with his award before receiving his own.

Councillor Holman, who retires next month, was given the silver axe for his service to the county council and the fire brigade committee.

"This is the most coveted award in the British fire service," said Councillor Holman. "It was a very pleasant surprise and a great honour."

"We felt that Councillor Holman was very deserving of this accolade," said fire brigade spokesman Evan Morris.
