amateurs

THE coming week sees the Widnes open-age cup semi-finals when West Bank meet the winners of the Farnworth and Widnes Albion tie at Simms Cross on April 29 and the following day St Maries take on Simms Cross at St Maries. Both games start at 6.45pm.

Big crowds are anticipated as the competition shows the town's top amateurs in action culminating on a day full of entertainment as the juniors and seniors share the finals day at Simms Cross on Bank Holiday Monday.

St Maries are favourites for the Division One title and tonight Wednesday April 23 meet Widnes Albert in the NWC Cup Final at Widnes Rugby Union club.

The Albert are also assured of promotion to Division One next year.

The town's newest club Widnes Albion have won their division and Halton Hornets in their first season at open-age for many years are also challenging for the Division Six title.

West Bank 13 Pilkingtons...20

THE game was closely fought throughout with a late converted try giving victory to Pilks.

Bank took the lead with a penalty goal from scrum-half Mark Birmingham and added to it with a try from second row John Buckley, converted by Birmingham.

A slip up in defence let Pilks in for a converted try but a drop goal from loose forward Mark French gave the Bank a 9-6 half-time lead.

The game turned on a second half dismissal with Mark Ryan sent off for retaliating, with the aggressor getting away free.

Pilks regained the lead with a try from a clear forward pass.

Centre Ian Connor put the Bank back in front with ten minutes left but a last minute try gave Pilks victory.
