NEWTON residents should take extra care of themselves as the winter weather takes hold says St. Helen's Borough Council.
Andy McCully, Council Health Promotion Officer, has urged the young and elderly to "freeze out" accidents in a special winter warning.
"Ice covered canals and ponds may look attractive and inviting but no frozen surface is safe. Parents must stress the dangers," he said.
As the cold spell sweeps the area, elderly people are being advised to wear warm clothing, have plenty of hot drinks and eat regularly. It is also essential to wear a hat because one third of body heat escapes from the top of the head.
Other winter wise tips to follow; Take safety advice from newspapers, television and radio seriously, always do as they say. Supervise children when they are involved in winter sports, and keep dogs away from ice covered water.
Most importantly, be a good neighbour by checking on the elderly.
