A POLICE campaign to clamp down on drink driving over Christmas has been declared a roaring success.
The Merseyside Police operation, codenamed Nemesis II, was designed to make sure Newton motorists got the message, "Stay alive - don't drink and drive."
Random roadside checks proved extremely effective, and the number of arrests fell by 20 per cent.
Traffic police now plan to continue the scheme on Newton Roads throughout the year.
Chief Inspector Smolen, head of Merseyside Traffic Department, said: "More people than ever are getting the message that if you drink and drive, you will be stopped, not only during Christmas, but for the rest of the year."
