DETECTIVES believe that a vicious robber is targeting Warrington's elderly.

Officers suspect the man is responsible for several raids on pensioners' homes during the past few months, often posing as an official caller before forcing his way in.

In the latest incident, a couple in their 80s were subjected to a 20 minute ordeal as the raider attacked them before ransacking the property for money.

The 88-year-old man had been preparing tea for his wife when he was disturbed by a knock at the back door of their Melville Street house.

As he went to unlock the door, the 'caller' smashed it open, knocking him to the kitchen floor.

He was then taken into the living room with his 86-year-old wife where he was pushed to the floor again and kicked several times.

The raider then threatened them with a blade before searching the house. He fled with a large amount of cash.

The elderly man required treatment for shock and superficial injuries at Warrington hospital but was later released.

Police have described the robbery as an appalling crime against a defenceless couple. They also fear he may strike again.

Detective Constable Debbie Bunker said: "We are linking this latest robbery to others that have happened in the area recently.

"It seems that with every case the man is getting more forceful and violent and we are afraid he will continue to prey on defenceless victims.

"This man has used packages to pose as a delivery man on occasions which throws people off guard.

"Our advice is not answer the door if they don't know the caller and if they're still unsure, contact the police," she said.

The man is described as white, aged 30 to 40 years old, 5ft 10ins to 6ft tall, with short brown hair.

Officers are appealing for anyone who may have seen the man in the Melville Street area around the time of the robbery.
