COWBOY builders are to be run out of town with the introduction of a 'Built in Quality' award scheme.

The council initiative will give Warrington's builders the chance to win awards for high quality work, allowing them to use a special logo in advertising or on headed notepaper.

All builders, from one man operations to major companies, can enter the scheme with projects backed by the council's Building Regulation Control Service.

Every year, council experts will single out four major schemes, such as housing sites and commercial developments, and five smaller schemes, such as single houses.

Building Control Officers have been assessing projects since last summer and their nominations will be studied by a panel of judges. The awards will be made at a civic reception in April.

Technical Services Chairman, Clr John Joyce, said: "This scheme is unique in that it is open to any building project, no matter how big or small.

"It will help stamp out cowboys and give a well-deserved boost to Warrington's good builders."
