FIRE and smoke swept through a pet shop in Orford Lane on Tuesday night.

Three fire crews from Warrington and Birchwood were called to tackle the blaze at Nadin's Pet Store. Eight firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the flames which damaged half of the shop and filled eight rooms with smoke. The shop no longer stocks small animals, though several fish did die in the blaze.

A fire brigade spokesman said the fire was started by a fault in an electrical socket.
