ENVIRONMENTAL plans are being formed for the coming year as part of the borough council's Local Agenda 21 programme.

A number of meetings and discussions have been held on different topics across the borough to promote and improve the local environment.

A series of Planning for Real consultation events were held in Alexandra ward in Crewe with several ideas coming forward.

Many residents felt there should be more attractive open spaces, local clean ups, and other green initiatives which could be combined within a community garden.

Members of the Alexandra Plus Action Group identified land near Claughton Avenue's allotments as a possible site and are visiting other community garden sites to gather information.

The third annual LA21 Schools' Forum is being organised for Friday February 12 with each of the borough's secondary schools sending up to 40 pupils.

This year's theme is Healthy People, Healthy Planet and the aim is to explore the links between diet, exercise, health and the environment.

Many organisations have already agreed to make presentations including Crewe Alex Community Programme and Health Promotions.

The event is jointly funded by South Cheshire College and the borough council and the Government Office north west has agreed in principle to granting £400 for publicity, packs and lunches.

The possibility of a farmers' market in Crewe and Nantwich is being considered following a visit to a similar project in Bath.

The LA21 group is also set to produce an introductory leaflet offering advice to anyone wishing to plant trees and woodlands especially to mark the Millennium.
