SECURITY cameras look set to be installed and others upgraded across Crewe and Nantwich town centres.

Some £30,000 could be set aside to provide two new cameras in High Street, Crewe and Pepper Street, Nantwich although this equipment would be relocated from Welsh Row

The money would also be used to upgrade some current camera controls which have components up to six years old.

Two cameras are already being installed on Nantwich Road early this year.

Last year the Cheshire Police Architectural Officer identified Crewe and Nantwich's CCTV system as the most effective in the county.

The scheme has also been chosen as the benchmark system for a follow up report to inform future policy development on CCTV throughout Cheshire.

A council spokesman said: "The police are very complimentary of the competence and professionalism of the camera operators and the high degree of co-operation between them and the police, both in the police control room and on the town streets.

"In Crewe, High Street with its cinema, restaurants and bars, is becoming increasingly lively and a camera located at the top of High Street would address this situation and also give good views along Edleston Road and back over Chester Bridge towards the town centre.

"In Nantwich, Pepper Street remains the only major shopping street without CCTV cover and would benefit greatly by the installation of a camera."

The borough council environmental services committee is due to make a decision on the funding today, Thursday.
