ROGUE traders who trick elderly people into paying out for unnecessary repairs on the doorstep are being targeted by trading standards chiefs.

Consumer watchdogs from the borough council have issued a warning to the public - to coincide with the current winter weather - not to be conned by craftsmen who "cold call" offering to replace slates or fix frozen pipes.

Technical services chairman Clr John Joyce said: "Too often we hear horror stories, usually involving older people who have been conned by rogue traders who cold call at the door.

"These rogues tend to be very convincing and it can be quite difficult to work out whether or not they are genuine.

"We feel it is better if consumers do not agree to buy on the doorstep. Consumers should ask the trader to give them written information about their product or service.

"Genuine businesses will readily give out such details. People should then think very carefully, possibly consulting friends or family and, if relevant, get other quotes before making any decision to purchase."

The alert applies to sales staff as well as traders, stress trading standards bosses. People of all ages fall victim to the rogues but elderly people especially appear to be the favourite targets.

Watchdogs have produced a special door-hanger leaflet to enable consumers to take charge when traders are on the doorstep.

It is available from any of the town's libraries or by contacting trading standards on 442678.
