Four junior crews were in action in the national schools Head of the River on the Thames on Saturday to demonstrate how much potential Northwich RC possesses. Two excellent top three finishes were the highlight for Northwich, who were one of only two clubs entering crews.

The women's junior 14 coxed quad of Zofia Rutkowski, Lucy James, Kylie Langridge and Shelly Alder with cox Lucy Rossall came second behind Headington over the three mile course in a time of 10 minutes.

A new crew, they showed they have a great chance at the national championships in July.

The women's junior 15 coxed quad also finished second in their category in a time of nine minutes 59 seconds. The crew, who were also behind a Headington boat, were: Sian Murray, Jenny Davey, Lizzie Rossall and Eve Palfreyman with cox Alec Palfreyman.

The newly formed women's junior 18 eight did excellently, despite all but two rowers being just 16. They finished 11th in a time of 15 minutes 57 seconds. The men's junior 16 eight crew faced stiff opposition and also managed to finish 11th.

On Sunday the club's senior eight women's crew completed the Head of the River along the boat race course. They did superbly, improving on last year, to finish 83rd from 237 entries in a time of 21 minutes 15 seconds. The crew was a mix of young novices and veterans. The same crew (Dawn Pattinson, Ruth Port, Sam Ridgeway, Sarah Gibbs, Lynn Poole, Davina Scott, Carolyn Ritchie and Rachel Cope with cox Leanne Kirk) will be in action this weekend in Chester with the men's squad.
