WARRINGTON'S Euro MP has welcomed the resignation of the entire European Commission.

Brian Simpson described the mass resignation as a victory for the democratically elected European Parliament and said the Commission had no alternative. The whole Commission was forced to quit after a damning report into fraud, mismanagement and nepotism that implicated the President Jacques Santer.

Mr Simpson said there was no alternative: "This incident not only gives us the opportunity for a root and branch sort out of the way the Commission works, but it proves how effective the European Parliament has become.

"Some five years ago the Labour group in the Parliament expressed grave reservations about Mr Santer's appointment and I feel those fears were vindicated. We have to remember that five years ago Mr Santer was not the first choice for the job.

"However in the long term the EU will be strengthened by these events. The European Parliament has at last come of age."
