RANGERS 22

North West Counties Division Three

THE two qualities which earned Weaverham Rangers three straight titles were missing on Saturday as they crashed to defeat after an inept performance.

And with the final of the Tetley Walker Cup just two weeks away, coach Mike Redman will need to work hard to get the defence and discipline back into his team.

Despite starting brightly, Rangers were soon 14 points down. They conceded a string of penalties, two of which were converted and two of which led to tries, one of them converted.

Rangers hit back through Damien Measures who raced over for a try which Mike Redman converted for a 14-6 half-time score.

But after getting back into the match, Rangers conceded two tries within five minutes of the restart to go 18 points down.

They hit back again, led by man of the match Mark Bebbington. Glynn Hughes and Roger Pickering both scored tries with Redman adding one conversion. With eight minutes left Bebbington went over in the corner and Redman added the touchline conversion to put Rangers just two points behind.

They kept battling away but were devastated when their hosts sealed victory in the final seconds.
