A QUICK-THINKING plumber was hailed a hero this week after saving the lives of an elderly couple in a freak accident.

Michael Topping was installing a shower in the bathroom of a bungalow in Stratton Close, Brookvale when he was suddenly engulfed in a flashback.

Flammable vapours from the foam he was using to bed in a shower tray were ignited by a pilot light from the central heating boiler in the hall.

Despite suffering burns, Michael managed to lead the tenants, aged 80 and 83 to safety, and raise the alarm.

His boss, Tommy Wright praised his courage. He said:"He was engulfed in the flame but managed to get the tenants out, turn the services off and raise the alarm. It could have been much worse.

"The elderly couple have thanked him for getting them out safely.

"It was a totally freak accident. I have never come across anything like this in 25 years.

"Michael has been working with me for a number of years and is an approved plumber and totally competent."

Michael was taken to hospital and treated for burns and shock. He is now recovering at home.

He is employed by Wrights of Smithdown Road, Liverpool, who were working as contractors for Liver Housing.

The bungalow was extensively damaged in the fire. Ninety per cent of the bathroom, kitchen and hall were destroyed, whilst heat and smoke damage affected the rest of the property.

Leading firefighter Ken Sharratt said it would be impossible for anyone to live in the fire ravaged property.

He warned people, particularly DIY enthusiasts, to be aware of the dangers when using flammable substances.

Leading firefighter Ken Sharratt said:"This was a professional firm. It is a lesson to everyone. Whatever you do, risk assess it and identify any potential problems before you begin.

"Ventilation is also important."

The elderly couple have been rehoused.
