CHESHIRE County Council is hoping to build new tennis and netball courts along with a sports hall, classrooms and extensions at two Congleton schools.

The council has put forward planning applications to the borough council for building work at Dane Valley and Heathfield High Schools.

The work, part of the reorganisation of education in the town which will see Westlands High School close, is expected to start at the end of the year.

The application includes five new tennis courts, new sports hall, changing rooms, library, labs, music and drama studio and an extension to the dining hall at Dane Valley.

Heathfield's plans include a change of the current courts to car parking, new tennis and netball courts, new staffroom, enhanced art and sixth form facilities and a new bus standing area within the site.

There is also a plan to change agricultural land near Heathfield High School into a playing field and multi-purpose floodlit synthetic sports pitch.

The work is due to be carried out in two phases and is set to be completed by 2001.
