AS we approach the start of a new school year - are there people out there who are dreading the increase of commuting traffic as those dear parents ferry their children back and forth to school?

I wonder what Roald Dahl would have had to say about parents who indulge their children in such a way. Remember in Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory how he took the best intentions of those over generous parents only to show that they were doing no great favours at all!

In just one generation the number of primary school children who are driven to school has gone from 6.5% to 58%, and the number walking to school has halved.

I know more parents go out to work and the car is an essential part of juggling the busy day together, but if it's really not necessary try walking, or cycling if there's a safe route.

The benefit is so much greater; they arrive at school refreshed and awake, they have had some much needed exercise.

Don't underestimate the ability of your child, a mile walk is quite within their capability, although sadly it may not be within the parents!

Establishing good habits begins at home and, just as you are quite anxious to give them the best drink for their teeth, be as equally concerned for the future welfare of their bones and hearts.

Walk those short trips to school, be brave!
