Witton Albion 1

Witton Albion put a run of three bad results behind them to bounce back with a win at Cheshire rivals Congleton.

Witton needed a win to give their season a kick-start and a Paul Hennin goal late in the second half gave them the points in an entertaining game.

Both teams were looking to attack and with Witton manager Nigel Gleghorn choosing to play three at the back and himself in midfield, it wasn't long before they'd created an opening.

Lee Anderson, playing as a wing-back, had Witton's first opportunity when his 20-yard shot skimmed the Congleton post.

Peter Billing also came close to breaking the deadlock three minutes later when his powerful shot was well saved by ex-Wincham Park goalkeeper Mike Allison.

Phil McGing also had to be alert and stopped several Congleton attacks as the home side pushed for the first goal.

Congleton winger Rod Thornley was proving a large thorn in Witton's side and the tricky player had two opportunities to give his side the lead but his shots were off target and Witton escaped.

Anderson continued to cause problems on the right-hand side and only a good save at the near post by Allison prevented another long-range effort from sneaking in.

Both sides were looking for the breakthrough and McGing saved well from Thornley before Witton launched an immediate counter-attack and almost scored through David Anane on 68 minutes.

Only moments later they did find a way through. Lee Cox and Anane linked well and his cross was only half cleared by Congleton's defence to Hennin. He made no mistake and fired home Witton's winner.

Witton travel to Workington this Saturday in a re-arranged fixture and could also face league leaders Burscoe at home on Tuesday night if Burscoe's FA Cup clash with Farsley doesn't end in a draw.

Kick-off will be at 7.30pm and for more details call the club.
