THERE are two reasons why businessman Martyn Bracegirdle is running from Land's End to John O'Goats and back again.

The first is to raise money for charity and the second is to celebrate the approach of the Millennium.

Martyn, aged 53, of Antrobus, will set off from Land's End this morning, Wednesday, and arrive back on December 30 having completed more than 2,000 miles.

During his run, named the Millennium 2000 Challenge, Martyn is expecting to wear out 12 pairs of running shoes, moving at an average speed of seven miles an hour.

"Although I don't belong to any running clubs, I've been a keen runner since my teens," said Martyn.

"It's just something that is in my blood."

Martyn, who is chairman of Cheshire Guidance Partnerships Careers Service and director of North and Mid Cheshire Enterprise Council, is raising money for Mencap and Marie Curie Cancer Care.
