Widnes Golf Club

THE Bank Holiday weekend provided a feast of golf at Widnes Golf Club, the four-day package opening on Friday with the annual team competition and finishing on Monday with the August Mixed.

The Team competition produced a desperately tight finish with three of the quartets returning identical score of 91.

Even the back nine play-off failed to decide the sinners and it needed scrutiny of the scores on the last three holes to determine the prizes.

Victory went to the combination of three veteran members - Steve Roberts, Alan Potter and Gordon Axford - with the younger accompaniment of Mark Weston.

They just held doff the line-up of Tony Karalius, Noel Cathcart, Fred Whitfield and Sam Cooke.

Third to with the same score were Bob Fraser, Mark Fraser, David Gill and Mark Cunningham who were one point ahead of the combination of Bob Burnett, Frank Myler, Mike Ryan and Lol Ogburn.

The feature event on Saturday was the Autumn Meeting and Division One of that competition was led by Ian Ratcliffe who returned an excellent score of 70-6=64 to bring his handicap down to category one status of five.

Ratcliffe had a shot to spare over Phil Gerrie, who returned a score of 73-8=65 which was in turn was one ahead of Jim Tansey who took the overall council prize for aggregate performances in the spring, summer and autumn meetings.

That competition is divided between handicaps of 12 and under and those above 12.

Division Two went to John Whorton who recorded a nett 62, the same as John Smart who was edged out on card play-off.

Whorton's victory also earned him the divisional Council Prize.

On Sunday it was Monthly Medal day and honours there went to Billy Twigg who went round in a gross 75 off his handicap of 12 to finish a shot ahead of Steve Carter 81-17=64.

Danny Mather finished third with the better to two 65s ahead of Mark Helsby.

Finally, Monday's Mixed produced a high-handicap winner in John Hollins and Claire Hamilton who posted a nett score of 61.8 after going round in 90 strokes.

Roy and Alice Adam (75-12=63) edged out Dave and Beryl Trehy (89-26=63) for second place on a card play-off.
