YOUNGSTER Sarah Weir was the toast of Halton Girls u10s in a recent football tournament.

Not only did the midfielder come to the rescue when she volunteered to go in goal when her team found themselves without a keeper, but she also won three man-of-the-match awards for her efforts - all against boys' sides.

The Grange five-a-si de competition involved more than 850 young footballers from all over the country with the Halton Borough teams the only girls to take part.

The u10s had three draws against three teams from Warrington and the Wirral and only lost 2-0 against the eventual winners of the competition Birchwood A from Warrington.

Coach John Snee said: "The team played against boys and gave a good account of themselves. Sarah was outstanding. She was named mom by the referees in three matches."

Back in July the u10s competed in the Moss Farm ladies tournament in Northwich.

Teams from all over the country plus several international teams were also involved.

The under 10s played well beating Bury 3-0 and Lichfield Diamond 1-0.

They were beaten by Leeds City Vixens and Rotherham Greens and in a hard-fought game lost 1-0 to Manchester City.
