Revellers will now be able to dance to music at the Red Cow in Princess Street.

But there will be restrictions. The pub will not be allowed to play live music or extend its hours and has been advised to install CCTV cameras.

Magistrates at Macclesfield Town Hall gave the Canute Place pub a trial six-month licence instead of the usual one-year last Wednesday.

Manager Debbie Mladenovic this week confirmed the Whitbread-owned pub had begun installing cameras.

"We are relieved at the outcome after months of hassle and stress," she said. "I'm confident they will extend it to 12 months."

Police - backed by a petition from local residents - had objected to the application.

They complained of violence, disorder and foul language as customers left the pub.

Chief Inspector Paul Keeling said the licence could make the pub more popular and give them an added headache.

"People have been urinating outside and lying on the floor of the street," he said.

But new landlord Eamon Hunt, who took over the pub in March, said things had improved. "We have cleaned the place and are looking to attract adults in their mid-20s upwards rather than teenagers," said Miss Mladenovic.

The pub intends to play a musical mix that includes jazz and soul.

"The last three songs will be slow and smoochy following the theory people will quieten down and go home peacefully," she said.
