A dangerous mix of freezing fog and black ice caused an accident in Mereheath Lane.

Two cars were involved and one ended up on its roof in a field.

Both drivers escaped unhurt.

"I was just turning a left-hand bend when I saw a tailback," said Richard Scotti. "I tried to brake but just skidded to a stop an inch before hitting the car in front.

"If it had been the blind bend before it could have been very serious."

Flooding on parts of the A556 Chester Road also forced lane closures leading to tailbacks.

Yesterday Pc Andrew Atherton urged drivers to slow down and take extra care on ungritted roads.

"Take more time on your journeys and keep a good distance behind the car in front," he said.

A 22-year-old man whose Toyota car overturned and crashed into trees off Mereheath Lane last month is still in critical at Manchester Royal Infirmary.
