A NEW concept in concrete made from waste materials to use as a seal on landfill sites, is being trialled at UK Waste's site at Risley, Warrington.
Pioneer Concrete of Salford has teamed up with scientists from Coventry University and Imperial College, London, to work on the new materials.
The new concrete includes furnace slag, cement, metallic slag and other non-hazardous waste. Many such materials are a problem for disposal in the very sites it is hoped they will be used to seal.
The new concrete at Risley is now being monitored.
The two universities involved in the project are being funded to the value of £360,000 over three years for research through the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme by UK Waste and 10 partners.
