WARRINGTON Athletic Club's young athletes competed in the Charles Sumner Memorial Cross Country Relays at Gatley on Sunday.

In the under nine girls' three-quarter mile cross country race and first home for Warrington was Hannah Tart in an excellent fourth place, 6mins 12sec, closely followed by teammates Hayley Derbyshire, fifth in 6.15 and Danielle Turner, seventh in 6.44. The girls took the silver team award with 16 points.

The u11 girls one-mile relay team of Jade Crosby, 7.24, Heather Timmins, 8.7 and Sarah Oldfield, 7.27, took a creditable fifth place in a large field of 13 teams.

Rachel Brookes ran a fast first leg of 7.19 in the u13 girls race to hand over to Helen Plant in fourth place. Helen ran well to hold fifth with 7.46, handing over to Suzie Chiverton. Chiverton ran well to regain fourth place in 7.25.

The u13 boys team of Mark Fox, 7.44, Mike Timmins, 8.26 and David Savage, 6.38, finished in seventh place. Savage's run was the fourth fastest leg of the race.

Warrington's u15 girls team started well with Jody Ormerod coping well with the thick mud to complete the first leg in 7.25 for third place.

Second leg runner Nadia Koriba showed her character in handing over in fourth place despite a bad fall at the bridge crossing and final leg runner Kim Roach ran a tremendous race to overhaul the Manchester Harriers Athletes to finish with a time of 7.10 and take the team bronze medal.
