THE forgotten 'Old Brigade' in Warrington is battling for its own recreation space in the town centre.

A four-year campaign by the Warrington branch of the British Pensioner and Trade Union Action Association saw members handing a petition to Mayor of Warrington Clr Sheila Woodyatt with 1,000 signatures.

Group secretary Peter Haslam said: "We have been campaigning for a community centre for the elderly for more than four years.

"While having support in principle from various bodies, there does not appear to be the political will to get this scheme finalised.

"This is the second time we have presented a petition to the council and our petition of 1,000 signatures this time round was obtained at the market in less than four hours. So the demand by the public is as strong as ever.

"Warrington is fast becoming the only town in the British Isles that does not have some type of facility for older people in the centre of their town."

The group has even produced a rough sketch of how they would like the hall to be laid out complete with concert hall for bingo, dancing, concerts, stage shows and lectures as well as a cafeteria, lounge, keep-fit room and crafts room.
