THE organisers of Europe's biggest disability information day have celebrated their most successful event yet and are looking forward to making things even bigger and better this year.

The team which created Disability Awareness Day, a giant extravaganza of information, celebration and fun, held a presentation evening to distribute the proceeds of last year's event.

A £1,000 grant went to the Leonard Cheshire Griffiths Court Appeal to build a respite centre in the town and prize money was also given to a host of top fundraisers.

Sponsored by the GUARDIAN, £200 was awarded to Warrington Stroke Club, £50 was given to Wirral Arthritis Care Group and £100 was given to the spinal injury charity Back Up.

This year's DAD, its 10th anniversary, takes place on Sunday, July 22.

Organiser Dave Thompson said: "DAD started in 1992 as a new event that had never been heard of before, and we were told it would never get off the ground.

"Some individuals said that disabled people wouldn't go to it and business people wouldn't give up their time, but we have proved everybody wrong.

"Around £150,000 has been raised for local charities, but DAD is about more than that. It's to celebrate what's available for disabled people.

"We believe information is the key to independence."
