SCHOOLS in Warrington have performed so well in exams that they are effectively losing out in the latest round of Government funding.

Education bosses for the Government this week announced a total of £32 million is to be taken out of the £120 million School Improvement Grant to help underperforming schools improve standards.

But because Warrington's schools have been doing relatively well, they are only receiving £70,000 out of the £32 million.

It also means the town's education chiefs are being left out of pocket because of the money being taken out of the School Improvement Grant.

Malcolm Roxburgh, education director, said: "I welcome the £70,000 for the help it will give, but because Warrington has relatively few schools with poor results, we are going to get less back then we are losing.

"But that in turn shows the Government recognises that Warrington's schools are performing well - which is to be welcomed."

Despite the fact the council is not going to get as much as it had hoped through the School Improvement Grant, Mr Roxburgh remains confident the money will be made up by increases in other funding grants.
