Birchfield 2nd 29 Collegiate 2nd 10

BIRCHFIELD recorded their first win of the season thanks to a fine second half performance.

The home side put Collegiate under pressure with strong defence from Quinn, Hunter and Whitfield and good play from the forwards led to John Whitty scoring wide out after a mazy run in which he sidestepped five opponents.

Whitfield missed the conversion but added a penalty to increase the lead before Collegiate hit back with an unconverted try to make the half time score 8-5.

Collegiate pinned Birchfield in their own 20 but good clearing runs from Quinn and sound defensive work from the forwards kept the line intact.

Quinn launched himself on a counterattack and released Lewis, whose inside ball was kicked on by Whitfield. Whitty picked up the ball and scooted 50 yards to score under the posts, Whitfield converting.

Whitty repeated the trick 10 minutes later for his hat trick and Whitfield converted again. Eddie Whitfield plunged over the line for another try and Whitfield's conversion made the final score 29-10.

This was a good all round performance with fine contributions from Quinn and Hunter in the backs and Whitfield, Cogley and Wood in the forwards. M.O.M. John Whitty.
