Ormskirk 17 Birchfield 26

AFTER last week's impressive win in the first round of the National & Provincial Cup, Birchfield were up against newly-promoted Ormskirk.

The first 25 minutes was played at a terrific pace and the home side really meant business but full back Whitfield broke from the halfway line and eluded four Ormskirk players to score a brilliant individual try.

Another try 10 minutes later from winger Reeves, which was converted by Whitfield, gave Birchfield a 12-point half time lead.

A shoulder injury to winger S Lowe, gave an opportunity for his older brother G Lowe to make his first team debut in a match where four sets of brothers were playing in the same side.

Ormskirk scored a converted try and a penalty to make in the second half and their efforts were rewarded with another converted try, which gave them a 17-12.

Birchfield were reduced to 14 men when S Pitt was sin-binned for 10 minutes but the team rallied and with 10 minutes to go, a pass out wide found G Lowe, who scored in the corner.

The try was converted brilliantly by Whitfield to make it 17-19 to Birchfield and a wonderful try by D Pitt with minutes left on the clock put the game well and truly out of reach of the home side. The try was again converted to make the final score Ormskirk 17 Birchfield 26.

M.O.M went to Ste Pitt for the forwards and his brother Darren Pitt for the backs. A mention to the whole side who showed great character to come back to win this game.

Birchfield's next game is at home against Wigan, kick-off 3pm on September 29.
